Mattapoisett Harbor, Christmas 1996

The season's first snowfall at Shipyard Park
Now known as Shipyard Park, this location was the site of one of the many
shipyards which ringed Mattapoisett Harbor in the early 1800s. From this
spot were launched sturdy Whaling vessels destined to sail the waters of
the world.
At the turn of the century, a group of local citizens purchased the land
of this former shipyard, and donated it to the town for the purpose of creating
a park. Atop the gazeebo sits a wind vane in the shape of a Whale, recalling
the town's heritage.
Today, Shipyard Park is the focal point of many social activities, including
the arrival of Santa Clause to greet the town's children each Christmas
season.
