World wide contact….the following is an edited version of an email received by Eve Welts, our liaison, “I belong to (the Newton Seniors Computer Club) which is associated within the Newton Seniors Center, in Newton, a part of the city of Surrey, in British Columbia, Canada. The city is 9 years old and located just north of Bellingham Washington USA. I came upon your group while looking for our Group http://groups.msn.com/NewtonSeniorscomputergroup It is amazing that two groups can have the same name, doing the same thing…seniors and computers…would you believe the coincidence? Place to save… space can be disappearing for many reasons. Check out this one. Does your anti-virus software maintain a log file that is full to overflowing? Find it and direct the number of entries you wish it to keep. Then, delete the overflow.

Close the preview window in Outlook Express….to help keep the viruses and worms out….George Martins suggests that he opens the View menu, Layout, and unchecked the box which said Show Preview Pane. This requires you to double click opening the mail to read it and worth the extra click.

If you care to know…Megahertz (MHz) and gigahertz (GHz)) are most commonly used to describe processor speed. One hertz is one cycle per second. A megahertz is 1 million clock cycles per second. Megabyte (MB) is a measurement of data. One byte is comprised of eight bits. A bit of data is a single unit represented by either a one or a zero. This is the binary digit system responsible for the term “digital” in products such as digital cameras, digital cable and digital video. One megabite is approx. 1 million bytes of data. Ram is short for random access memory. It’s the solid-state memory (chip memory) in your computer. Your operating system stores programs and data in RAM. Programs run in this short-term storage area. The amount your RAM is able to store is measured in megabytes. Without RAM, random access memory, your PC would be left in a state of confusion. The more RAM you have, the more it can store and the faster your computer will function.

Add contacts to your list in Outlook 2000 …quick way when you receive an e-mail message from a person whom you want to add to your Outlook contact list, try this…open the e-mail message that contains the name you want to add to your list. In the From box, right click the name you want to make into a contact, and click Add to Contacts on the ‘shortcut menu. This creates a new contact with that person’s name and e-mail address already filled in. You can also fill in any additional info you have about that person i.e. phone, fax number and save it for easy access.
************************************************************************************
Who sent me this?…When you want to check out a sender of an e-mail in Microsoft Outlook, double click the e-mail, then click View/Options. In Outlook Express, click the e-mail. Then click File/Properties and select the Details tab. For Eudora, double click the message. Then click the Blah Blah button. In Netscape, click the message to open it. Then click View/Message Source to display the header. In each case you will find the tracking information. The key is the sections beginning with the word “Received” You may find several computers have handled the message and there will be several received sections. You will end up most of the time seeing who originated the e-mail. Handy information.
