Was Angeli's Conviction Based on Police Perjury?

Toni Marie Angeli's conviction may well have been based on perjured testimony by Cambridge police officer William Phillips.

Angeli has always contended that the main reason she was upset by the police interrogation was that Detective Phillips had told her that he had notified the Department of Social Services (DSS), and had also said "if you don't cooperate, I will take that kid away from you right now."

Phillips denied saying this under oath, and insisted that he could not have notified DSS, because, before going to Zona on the afternoon of November 2, the police did not know who Angeli was, nor did they know that the little boy in the photographs was Angeli's son.

But according to the DSS file recently obtained by Angeli's attorney, the Cambridge police contacted DSS at 11 a.m. on November 2. At that time, the Cambridge police knew who Angeli was, knew that Luke D'Ancona was her husband, and knew that Nico was their son. Furthermore, the police relayed to DSS such information as their dates of birth and social security numbers, and the fact that Luke was born in Britain.

The police also gave DSS Toni Marie and Luke's address and phone number. Thus the police already had answers to most of the questions they claimed they had wished to ask Angeli. Moreover, had they really wanted additional information, they could have obtained it in by much less confrontational and humiliating means than by setting up a sting with the cooperation of Zona Photographic Labs.
